Remedee: Empowerment Through Storytelling

May 28, 2008

Remedee is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that believes that everyone has a story, but too few have the opportunity to tell it. Our mission is to empower underserved youth with the resources and education to thoughtfully share their worlds through documentary filmmaking and new media. By giving young people of the world access to a voice, we strive to educate and empower our next generation.

Projects

Film Camp

In June 2007, Remedee brought Reel Lives participants to a three-day film camp in Lake Arrowhead, California. Each youth was completely immersed in documentary filmmaking in an idyllic setting. Under the guidance of film industry professionals, students learned to shoot video through courses that covered such topics as camera mechanics, composition, movement and lighting, using the woods as their backdrop. Students completed sound workshops and learned to edit their footage using professional equipment. They learned interview techniques enabling them to conduct investigative on-camera interviews. They also swam, ate healthfully and watched documentary films projected onto an outdoor screen.

The camp was a great success in stimulating participants’ interest in media and art, as well as providing an outlet for creative expression. The students adapted to new technologies and information at a very rapid pace. They explored the personal and societal hardships with which they struggle, such as gang violence, cultural integration and poverty. Self pride was manifest as the young filmmakers edited together their footage from the weekend and saw the results of their hard work.Reel Lives: Altadena, California

With the knowledge and skill gained at Remedee Film Camp, the student filmmakers returned home and made short documentary films about the challenges they face in reaching their dreams.

Each week over the course of a summer, students met with their assigned mentor to edit the footage that they shot and to receive feedback about the development of their films.

Each film makes a resonant statement about the many issues that face youth today. Some are funny, some are sad - all are illuminating.
