Fresh Eyes: Kids In Jail Find Photography

April 15, 2008

fresh_eyes_home_thumb.jpgThey are called “Juvenile Delinquents.” Or “Youthful Offenders.” Or whatever. They’ve broken the law. They’re doing time. And their prospects — upon re-entering a society that would just as soon shunt them aside — are, frankly, pretty dim.

We are teaching these kids how to take pictures. We give them hands-on training in photography, computer imaging, and printmaking. A way to see the world in a new light. We’re not miracle workers; we’re professional photographers. But we think we might have found a way to make a difference. No, it’s not a magic pill. But we’ve seen them change. From lost kids to young people with potential. Young people who are only just beginning to view the community as a place in which they have a stake.
