Through the Eyes of Haitian Children – Gallery Talk and Exhibition Opening

Through the Eyes of Haitian Children will showcase photographs of Haitian life taken before and after the devastating earthquake by youth participants in the Haiti-based project Zanmi Lakay (Haitian Creole for Friend’s Home). The project has been working with street children in Haiti for over 13 years, and was recently featured on “Lens,” the photo blog of the New York Times. The Price of Sugar, a film screening about Haitians working in slave-like conditions in the Dominican sugar industry, will augment the exhibition. Open to the public and free-of-charge. 2010 International Visual Sociology Association Conference

The 2010 International Visual Sociology Association conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on state of the art in research in these four areas of visual sociology: theory of the image, methodology, fieldwork, and publication of results.

Through Our Eyes: The Young Black Men’s Photovoice Project on Factors Affecting Their Transition to Manhood

Young black men from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds photographed the factors they felt affected their transitions to manhood in this gallery presented in collaboration with National Family Life & Education Center, Los Angeles Urban League, KAOS Network, Healthy African American Families II, California Institute of Health & Social Services, Children’s Institute, Inc., UCLA, RAND Corporation and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

AED launches Idea:Exchange with exhibit

AED, a nonprofit organization that works globally to improve education, health, social and economic development, will present participatory photography exhibit The Way We See It: Young Photographers Examine, Define, and Change Their World to introduce Idea:Exchange — “a place where people with ideas meet, engage, and present result,” according to its website.
