Neal Baer, M.D.: Mash-Ups: Merging Photography with New Media for Social Change

Drawing on the work of Venice Arts and other organizations, photographers and writers, Neal Baer, M.D. will give a visual exploration of how photography and new media are acting as compelling advocacy tools for community storytelling and social change.

Baer is a Harvard-trained physician, practicing pediatrician and award-winning television writer and producer. Since 2000, he has been the showrunner and executive producer of the NBC series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Before his tenure at Law & Order: SVU, he was a writer and executive producer of ER. Baer is a board member at Venice Arts, where he has been a co-creator of Venice Arts’ current, international documentary projects, and a co-founder of the Institute for Photographic Empowerment, a joint project of the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism and Venice Arts.

Natalie Bookchin: Artist Talk

Testament by Natali BookchinNatalie Bookchin will discuss her ongoing work, “Testament,” that culls material from online video diaries (vlogs) in which individuals produce a continuous stream of instant replays with analysis about their everyday lives and circumstances. Borrowing from the Greek model of theater featuring a chorus of many speakers, the project explores new forms of documentary, while transforming individual expressions into a social and collective activity.

Screening: “Pushing the Elephant”

Pushing the Elephant

Part of the USC Institute for Global Health’s annual lecture series, this special screening will feature testimony by Rose Mapendo and a behind-the-scenes look with filmmakers Beth Davenport and Elizabeth Mandel. Through refugee Rose Mapendo’s story, the film explores the long-term and often hidden effects of war on women and families as well as what it means to become an active advocate for peace.
