This seminar will explore how cameras are being used in Los Angeles and around the world as well as discuss relevant issues in the participant photography field. Through the Eyes of Haitian Children – Gallery Talk and Exhibition Opening

Through the Eyes of Haitian Children will showcase photographs of Haitian life taken before and after the devastating earthquake by youth participants in the Haiti-based project Zanmi Lakay (Haitian Creole for Friend’s Home). The project has been working with street children in Haiti for over 13 years, and was recently featured on “Lens,” the photo blog of the New York Times. The Price of Sugar, a film screening about Haitians working in slave-like conditions in the Dominican sugar industry, will augment the exhibition. Open to the public and free-of-charge. 2010 International Visual Sociology Association Conference

The 2010 International Visual Sociology Association conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on state of the art in research in these four areas of visual sociology: theory of the image, methodology, fieldwork, and publication of results.

Video Contest: If I Had a Trillion Dollars

The American Friends Service Committee and National Priorities Project are sponsoring a short video contest to encourage youth’s involvement in the cost of war discussion. As war spending approaches the $1 trillion mark, the contest invites young people between the ages of 13 and 23 to consider what they would do with the money.

Videos must be submitted by November 20, 2010. First prize is $500 and a trip for two to Washington, D.C. Second and third-place winners will receive Flip video cameras.
