Photography For Change: Angkor Photography Festival

January 13, 2009

The first such event to be organized in Southeast Asia.  This festival was created in 2005 and this year, for the fourth time, the temples of Angkor will become a hub that will draw both famous and passionate photographers from around the world.

The Angkor Photography Festival showcases this year outdoor projections by celebrating regional and international photographers in different locations in Siem Reap.

The strong educational goals of the Angkor Photography Festival set it apart from other photography events. During their stay, famous photographers will tutor free workshops for emerging Asian photographers and the festival will also present its outreach programs for vulnerable people. The Angkor Photography Festival differentiates itself from other photography events with its strong educational, therapeutic and humanitarian goals.

Each year, during the festival, renowned photographers supervise photography workshops for street children of Siem Reap. Galvanised by the difference that these workshops made, the APF NGO created Anjali, a centre that provides a safe and fun educational environment for almost 80 children.
In 2007, a fundraising photo auction for the Anjali Children’s project was hold with prints donated by renowned photographers of the world.

As part of ArtWorks project, workshops for vulnerable people demonstrated the potential of the arts and photography to change lives. In 2006, a workshop was created with disabled adults and with a group of women with HIV/AIDS in 2007.

The APF NGO is proud of the pioneering work it has begun in combining arts therapies and photography to provide a powerful way of supporting and enabling transformation in the lives of people in difficulty.
